Collaboration in Focus: Arne Klungland Discusses Epigenetics at Inner Mongolia University

On October 13, Arne Klungland and Yanjiao Li visited the College of Life Sciences at Inner Mongolia University in Hohhot, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. They were invited by Professor Chengguang Liang, head of the research group where Yanjiao Li completed his master’s thesis.

Exploring Research Facilities

Prof Cheng-Guang Liang was the MSc supervisor of Yanjiao Li - now a researcher in Arne Klunglands group.  Prof Cheng-Guang Liang is famous for his research on mammalian oocyte maturation and early embryo development, including chromosome aneuploidy related human infertility and disease.

During the visit, Professor Klungland visited the College’s Core Instrumentation Facility and Metabolomics Analysis Platform, where he learned about the advanced local research infrastructure supporting life science research in the region.

Insights from an Academic Lecture

After the visit, Arne gave an academic lecture entitled “Oxidative demethylation; from DNA repair to epitranscriptomic regulation of meiosis and the preimplantation embryo.” In his presentation, he introduced recent developments in the study of epigenetic and epitranscriptomic regulation, with particular attention to the ALKBH family of demethylases and their roles in DNA repair, meiosis, and early embryonic development.

Strengthening Academic Ties for Future Research

Following the lecture, professors and students engaged in extensive discussions with Arne Klungland. The exchange focused on the functions of ALKBH family proteins, the roles of RNA modifications in early embryonic development, and potential opportunities for future research collaboration.

This visit strengthened academic exchange between CRESCO and the College of Life Sciences at Inner Mongolia University and has laid a foundation for future collaboration in research areas related to animal reproduction, epigenetics, and RNA modification.
