What is the Stem Cells Journal Club?
The Stem Cells Journal Club is a way to get the ‘inside scoop’ on the development of some inspirational hematology papers.
It’s an opportunity for you to take part in friendly and informal online sessions where invited speakers will share:
- Insights into their successes and failures
- Relatable, memorable, and funny anecdotes about conducting their research
- Stories about other impactful moments
Speaker
Dr. Teresa Gerhardt, MD, Clinician Scientist, University Hospital Frankfurt & Institute for Cardiovascular Regeneration, Goethe University Frankfurt will be presenting an article, “Mutation-dependent responses to sleep and exercise in clonal hematopoiesis".
What will be discussed
Can better sleep and regular exercise keep mutant blood stem cell clones in check, and reduce their cardiovascular consequences? We will discuss how lifestyle influences the expansion and behaviour of cells carrying common clonal haematopoiesis mutations, and why these effects differ substantially between JAK2, TET2, TP53 and DNMT3A. Combining human cohort data with mechanistic mouse studies, the paper links sleep and exercise to changes in mutant progenitor-cell proliferation, inflammatory signalling and atherosclerosis. The key message: healthy habits matter, but apparently, not every mutant clone is equally impressed.
